Hello, Love Bugs!
The clock struck twelve, and immediately “happy new year” began to ring throughout the atmosphere. Couples and friends alike pulled closer to each other, locking lips in solidarity, as if to consummate the ritual arrival of the new year.
I remember opening my email my first day back from the holiday break, reading about 2020 being the year of the Woman, named after the freedom fighter, herself, Harriett Tubman. Excitement coursed through my veins as I watched the gates of barriers prior, begin to lift. There was a shift happening. Black voices were destined to be heard. No one expected the world to stand still and witness the senseless killing of black lives, visits from aliens, a pandemic, a movement for the right to breathe, murder hornets – listen, all I’m saying is the year of the “woman” has been hectic, to say the least!
COVID-19 came, grabbed us by the collar, and flung us all into isolation. This was a very dark and abysmal time for many. But for me, I see myself planted upon the murky water, surrounded by darkness and decay of the ghost of yesterday. And then, I’m taken away, flying upon the clouds, for a bird’s eye view of the Lotus flower. A symbol of purity, enlightenment, regrowth, and rebirth. Rooted in the dirtiest waters yet blossoms the most beautiful flowers. What an epiphany of resilience! Growth chased us as we nurtured the vision, working the mission to empower multicultural women to make their passions and purpose their paychecks.
When I think of my entire journey to right here, right now, I think of the great Phoenix. Rising through the cycle of transformation, death, rebirth – through the ashes of its fire; a symbol of eternity and foreverness. When I was an avid ally in my first few months of fellowship with AmeriCorps, I remember how radical, dedicated, and set on launching my social benefit community-centered haven for multicultural women. The brand has transformed so many times, and I know it will always be in a state of change. Like the butterfly, we go through cycles of transformation. But we must trust the process!
Today, I come to you with the harvest of the seeds planted so many years ago, when I knew I needed to be the change I wanted to see in the world. My mission is greater than me, but my passion and purpose make it even more priceless.
Do you know your mission in life? What drives your passions? Do you know your purpose? These questions floated through my headspace, demanding my attention as an intense lullaby stuck on repeat.
