Happy New Year Beloveds.

Did you know that a breezy island vacation doesn’t always require a trip through custom? Check out 8 of the most exotic spots every American citizen is free to enjoy without the extra hassle or annoying red tape. In fact, some won’t even require a plane ride.

Guam

Craving the glamour of the city and the call of the wild? This US territory offers gorgeous hikes, secluded beaches, traditional villages, and historic sites. Aside from the rustic, there’s plenty of luxury shopping, multicultural cuisine, and trendy nightlife spots in the district of Tumon in Tamuning. You really can have the best of both worlds.

Catalina Island, CA

Find a Mediterranean-inspired vacation spot just 22 miles off the coast of California. While the island offers plenty of outdoor activities, shopping, and fine dining, most of Catalina is “protected” land. This gives you access to unspoiled hiking trails, campgrounds, and beaches. You’ll get a glimpse of the island’s bison population, which were originally brought to the island for a film production and have called it home ever since.

American Samoa

Looking for something off the beaten path? American Samoa is the perfect getaway for rugged activities and relaxing slower-paced villages. You’ll find few comforts of home, but you’ll reap the benefits of seemingly untouched volcanic mountains, lush rainforests, and quiet beaches. Many traditional Samoan customs are still practiced, including observing Sunday as a day of rest.

Key West

Want the most accessible exotic vacation? The southernmost point in the US, Key West is actually closer to Havana than Miami. Luckily, though, you can get here (and to the other nearby keys) by car. A colorful spot, Key West offers plenty of outdoor activities, debaucherous nightlife, and high-brow exhibitions.

Northern Mariana Islands

Outdoor enthusiasts rejoice. There’s no shortage of adventures to be had here. Spend an afternoon scuba diving through a shipwrecked World War II vessel, cliff jumping or golfing at one of the area’s many courses. You’ll also find plenty of historic World War II sites to tour and luxury pads to rest your head.

U.S. Virgin Islands

For an authentic Caribbean vacation, head to the US Virgin Islands. Much like other Caribbean destinations, you’ll get white sand beaches and turquoise waters but here you’ll get three islands with different experiences. Looking for a life of leisure? St. Croix’s island time lifestyle is the perfect way to relax. For the adventurous, 60% of St. John is reserved for the Virgin Island National Park. Get away from it all on rugged hikes, lounge on hidden beaches, or get a glimpse of local wildlife. The most populated of the islands, St. Thomas offers plenty of shopping and dining.

Oooh, Guam looks gorgeous and I never would have thought to visit there. Definitely have to add that to the list.

  • Out of all of these, I’ve only been to the USVI and I had a blast! The water was one of the best parts of it.

  • Lia Miller-Spicer

This is a great post and so true. Travelers often forget we have exotic no passport needed destinations right in our back yard.

  • I would love to check some of these places. Guam was never on my radar. I’ve been to Puerto Rico and Key West Florida.

  • I hope the USVI and PR are back in good conidition to be a tourist. Also I didnt know Guam is US territorty.

  • KoKoa Magazine

Puerto Rico once recovered is on my list. I want to pour into the country and the people. And the Virgin Islands as well. Want to appreciate the beauty of the islands and the resilience of the people.

  • Yes to all of these, especially Guam, which I actually never even considered. And I am committed to getting back to PR to help their recovery with my tourism dollars.

We recently did Puerto Rico in 2016 and Hawaii in 2017. I hadn’t considered Guam… I gotta add that to the list!

  • I am DYING to get to American Samoa. I’ve also been to Puerto Rico three times and that is where I want to get married. Point blank period. My heart is hurting so badly for them and the VI residents post-hurricane. I’ve heard great things about Catalina Island and wouldn’t mind an adventure out there.

  • These are some beautiful places. I have to put these on my 2018 Travel bucket list. Thanks for sharing.

  • I have a friend who is from Samoa and has always told us it’s a place we simply must visit. I would love to check that off my list.

I’ve visited a few of these beautiful spots. Never visited Guam. Putting it on my list!
